Sunday night I was one of a privileged few (1 out of 150 people to be exact) who were lucky enough to attend a benefit concert for the Maasai Wilderness Fund put on by The Swell Season at a teeny little guitar shop in Santa Monica, McCabes.
The show was in a small back room with folding chairs set up. The room's walls were covered floor to ceiling with all kinds of stringed instruments. It made me want to learn to play one of them (I don't think my 4th grade violin lessons count).
(Alex just walked up to the stage and took this picture of Glen's guitar)
This would be the 4th time I've seen The Swell Season (you can read more about the last 2 times here) and I have to say it was by far the best. Seeing musicians like this in such an intimate venue is a once in a lifetime experience. At one point they asked for requests and Alex shouted out Van Morrison's 'Into the Mystic' and they played it!! Good job honey! They also had a guest musician with them, Leonard Cohen's guitarist Javier Mas. Javier was may be one of the best guitarist I've seen. He made his instrument purr. Here's a video of him and Glen jamming together.
They have another show tonight at The Largo. I think I might go beg at the door to be let in. I'm a bit embarrassed to admit it but I think I might be a groupie.
I will proudly admit to being a groupy. The weird thing is no one knows who The Swell Season is. And I am considering paying someone to stand in line in front of Largo for us.
ReplyDeleteAnd that video is absolutely amazing. Javier is a genius
